Venice

Venice, located in the northeast of Italy, is one of the most iconic cities in the world, known for its fascinating history, unique architecture, and picturesque canals. Founded in 421, the city developed on an archipelago of islands in the Venetian Lagoon, becoming one of the most important maritime powers in the Middle Ages due to its strategic location and trade.

The beating heart of Venice is its system of canals, which traverse the city and divide it into several islands. The Grand Canal, the main waterway, is lined with historic palaces, while gondolas are the traditional means of transport used by tourists to explore the city.

Venice is famous for its bridges, including the Rialto Bridge, the oldest and most iconic, and the Bridge of Sighs, which connects the Doge’s Palace to the prison. Each bridge is a symbol of the city and offers spectacular views of the canals.

St Mark's Square and the Basilica

Piazza San Marco is the vibrant heart of Venice, one of the most famous and captivating squares in the world. Surrounded by majestic historic buildings, the square is a central meeting point for both residents and tourists. It is renowned for its architecture, its vast open space, and its panoramic view of the Campanile di San Marco and the Basilica di San Marco.

The Basilica di San Marco is one of the most splendid examples of Byzantine art and architecture in Italy. Built in the 9th century, the basilica is dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice. Its façade is decorated with golden mosaics depicting biblical scenes, while the interior is a masterpiece of mosaic art, with over 8,000 square meters of mosaics covering the walls and ceilings.

The design of the basilica reflects the influence of Byzantine culture, with a Greek-cross layout and a series of domes that give the building a unique grandeur. The building also houses the Pala d’Oro, an altar richly decorated with gold and precious stones, one of the basilica’s most important treasures.

The Doge's Palace

The Doge’s Palace in Venice is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, located next to Piazza San Marco. It was the residence of the Doge and the center of power of the Republic of Venice. Its façade, adorned with arches and columns, faces the square, while the interior houses historic rooms such as the Sala del Maggior Consiglio and the Scala d’Oro, featuring artworks by Tintoretto and Veronese.

One of the most evocative points of the Doge’s Palace is the Bridge of Sighs, a covered bridge that connects the palace to the New Prisons. The name comes from the tradition that prisoners, as they were transferred from the court to the prison, would sigh as they saw the light of day for the last time through the small windows of the bridge.

Today, the Doge’s Palace is one of the most important museums in Venice and a leading tourist attraction. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events and stands as a testament to the power and grandeur of Venice in past centuries.
